MP
Birla Institute of Management
On August 12, 1999, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan secured permission
from the All India Council for Technical Education to
establish the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Harilal Bhagawati
College of Commerce and Management to offer full-time
MBA programmes. The intake for this batch was 60 students.
Under the patronage of Smt. Priyamvada Birla (also fondly
remembered as 'Badi Ma'), the institute was rechristened
as M P Birla Institute of Management in September, 2002.
In August, 2010, AICTE formally approved the intake
to 120 students per academic year. Riding on the popularity
of MPBIM's MBA course and the value-based learning imparted
at the institute, the intake is likely to be increased
further to 180 students per academic year.
Salient Features of M P Birla Institute of
Management
Though established under the aegis of the Bharatiya
Vidya Bhavan, MPBIM is run autonomously and has its
own governance systems in place. The institute benefits
from various factors:
-
Location : Located
close to the Chief Minster's residence, The Vidhana
and Vikas Soudhas (seats of the Karnataka Government),
The High Court of Karnataka, Cubbon Park, The Taj
West End Hotel, The Bangalore Race Course and Turf
Club, The Bangalore Golf Course and Hotel Chalukya,
The Central Bus Stations and Railway Station, MPBIM
is perched on prime city space and close to major
government and private establishments and amenities.
The institute is well serviced by public transport
including BMTC buses and autorickshaws with direct
connections to major hubs within the city. Its city-centre
location ensures that students at the institute
have little trouble in accessing the institute early
in the day or late in the evening. Safety and security
of students is at the core of the institutes concerns
and adequate provisions have been made to ensure
that students can peacefully take up their academic
responsibilities without interruptions.
-
Accreditation :
MPBIM is AICTE accredited and also follows ISO guidelines.
A formal accreditation system requires that the
institute adhere to a strict code of administration
and academic delivery. Students enrolling at and
graduating from MPBIM benefit from a recognised,
authentic and accredited postgraduate qualification.
-
MPBIM's Values :
While the institute borrows from the Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan in being a value-bases system, it has commanded
a reputation of its own in the past five years for
quality and values that reflect in some of the admission
criteria and extra-curricular activities that the
institute engages its MBA student executives in.
The top 6 percentile of MAT and Top Ranking CET
students enroll at MPBIM each year where highest
MAT scores in one particular year were 800 and the
average MAT scores were 717. MPBIM operates an impartial
student-intake procedure and ensures that students
enroll purely on merit. MPBIM encourages participation
by its students in activities with a social perspective
and one of many such activities is the event called
'Walkathon' that raises funds for charity.
-
The MBA Qualification
: While the number of business schools
offering MBA degrees have grown manifold in the
past five years to achieve a strength of more than
200 institutes in Bangalore alone, the best of the
MBA experience is offered at a select few and perhaps
in the top 20 % of management institutes. Also noted
is the limited availability of highly-skilled and
experienced faculty members to impart the value
addition that students pursuing the MBA degree seek.
Under such circumstances, there are few institutes
that motivate faculty members to impart the education
expected by students. At MPBIM, we find that we
are continuously working towards achieving this
objective and others, where the institute encourages
faculty members to be creative in their pedagogy.
Such a liberal policy while adhering to preset academic
regulatory conditions, provides the much-needed
education that is not just Chalk-and-Talk.
-
The MPBIM Brand and Positioning
: When it comes to a professional approach,
MPBIM strives to provide maximum brand exposure
to the brand name and is constantly reinforcing
its position as a provider of premium management
education at a national level. As part of a fresh
initiative by the management and in response to
changing market needs, MPBIM is now writing up long-term
plans for further strengthening its already-strong
brand in the management education markets. The ultimate
benefits of such initiatives in the past have been
our students and with new approaches and plans being
written, we are confident that future cohorts will
benefit even further from the MPBIM brand and its
reputation in the MBA world.
-
Faculty and Staff :
Few things matter more to freshers on the MBA than
a level of comfort in their new venture of securing
an MBA qualification. While the faculty at MPBIM
carry an array of work experience and academic exposure
with them to class each day, they also ensure that
there are light moments with students to keep the
learning process interesting. Case-based learning
and industrial visits (Toyota Kirloskar, VOLVO,
ACE Manufacturing, Karnataka Antibiotics, Coca Cola)
are built into the course along with support from
faculty for internships, projects and final placement.
An unbiased attitude where there is no room for
discrimination of any kind ensures a level learning
platform for students to compete and showcase their
academic prowess. Non-academic staff put in a fair
share of effort to ensure that safey, hygiene, order
and infrastructure are maintained to high standards.
-
Para-academics
: The institute is a bed of activity with a calendar
of events scheduled for different times of the year.
Students are encouraged to participate in Sports,
can learn the Arts including Music and Cinema and
are offered opportunities to travel to scenic locales
where they experience the pragmatic side to management
outside of the classroom. Events such as the annual
fest - Paradigm - and 'Wakathon' mark the major
highlights of the first academic year. Weekly talks
as part of the Business Leadership Forum where students
interact with business leaders, who have included
in the past names such as Dr. Stephen Howes (Lead
Economist, World Bank) Mr. Krishnamurthy. V. (CEO
JM Capital) Ms. Christine F. Jamal (VP Corporate,
TATA Coffee) Mr. Mohapatra (President, CMR Group),
are looked forward to by students.
